Short story, “The Riot and a Girl” written by University of British Columbia MFA Creative Writing alumna Tsering Lama, was nominated by the Malahat Review to be published in The Journey Prize Stories 20, an anthology that showcases the best of Canada’s new writers.

Former Creative Writing Writer in Residence, Miriam Toews receives a nomination for the 2008 Writers’ Trust Awards for her novel The Flying Troutmans. Towes, who will be competing with award winning authors for this $25,000 fiction prize won the Governor General’s Literary Award for fiction in 2004 for her novel A Complicated Kindness.

William REA Fellowship in TelevisionGRAD ONLY
One or more fellowships totalling $4,100 are offered by William Rea, Jr., founder of CKNW, in honour of his father, a pioneer Edmonton educator. The minimum value of each award is $500. The fellowship is open to a University of British Columbia graduate student of either sex, who shows the greatest aptitude in terms of scholarship and extracurricular activity for a career in television through drama, music, writing, photography, engineering or business. The student may attend any recognized graduate school which will further his training in this area, and the scholarship may be renewed for one or more years in appropriate circumstances.
Students wishing to be considered should apply by letter which should include a statement outlining program objectives, academic transcripts and a statement regarding financial circumstances. Applicants must also request three or more instructors familiar with his work to supply confidential statements indicating his merits and their estimate of his ability to pursue work in one of the areas of the field of study in which the candidate desires to work. Completed applications should be sent to the William Rea Fellowships in Television, c/o The Faculty of Graduate Studies, University of B.C., Vancouver, B.C. Applications must be received by July 1. The Program normally recommends 1 MFA per year.

Gordon H. WOODWARD Memorial Scholarship FICTION
A scholarship of $200 has been endowed by friends in memory of Gordon H. Woodward who, during the two decades before his death in 1966, contributed fiction to the best periodicals in Canada, England, Australia and the United States, and whose dedication to writing as an art is well-known here and abroad. It is awarded by the Department ofCreativeWriting to a student with a good academic record who has shown ability and promise in the writing of fiction.

Helen BADENOCH Scholarship ALTERNATING
A bequest from Ida Helen Badenoch provides four scholarships of $900 each, two for students most proficient in community health nursing practice and proceeding to further work in this field of study; and two for the most proficient students in a field of journalism, or in a field related to journalism.

Thea KOERNER Memorial ALTERNATING A scholarship of $1,600, endowed by her friends in memory of Thea Koerner and in recognition of her most generous encouragement of the arts at the University and in British Columbia, is awarded upon the recommendation by the Theatre Program, the CreativeWritingProgram, the Departments of Art History and Visual Art, and the School of Music, to a full-time student regularly enrolled in one of these areas and proceeding to a degree, whose past performance and future promise qualify him as the most suitable recipient of the award.

Harry and Hilda SMITH Foundation Scholarship
Scholarships totalling $350 have been endowed by the Harry and Hilda Smith Foundation. The late Harry Smith was a pioneer in the wholesale book business in Vancouver, having opened the first such facility in the city in 1933. He had a life-long interest in books which was continued by his late wife Hilda. The scholarships are made on the recommendation of the Department of CreativeWriting to students, graduate or undergraduate, on the basis of ability in CreativeWritingand of financial need.

Four awards of $1,000 each have been endowed by the University Chapter of the Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire. They are made on the joint recommendation of the Department of Art History, Visual Art & Theory, Department of Theatre, Film and CreativeWriting and the School of Music, for excellence in these fields.

George William KENWOOD Memorial Scholarship in CreativeWriting A $1000 scholarship has been endowed by the Kenwood family in memory of George William Kenwood, who maintained an abiding interest in fine writing throughout his life. It is awarded on the recommendation of the Department of CreativeWriting to a major or graduate student in the Department, on the basis of promise inCreativeWriting and of financial need.

Douglas and Beverly BANKSON Scholarship in CreativeWriting (INCOMING)
A scholarship of $700 has been endowed by colleagues, friends and former students to honour Douglas Bankson and his wife, Beverly, on the occasion of his retirement in 1985 from the Department of CreativeWriting. The scholarship symbolizes the respect, admiration and affection that many people have felt toward Douglas Bankson because of his superb achievement over many years as a teacher, administrator, originator and writer, and especially as a friend of promise, both inside and outside the university. It is awarded to an undergraduate student who has completed a CreativeWriting course in his/her first or second year at UBC, who has shown unusual promise as a writer and who will majorin CreativeWriting in the third year. The award is made on the recommendation of the Department of CreativeWriting.

Ranjit Singh AZAD Memorial Scholarship POETRY
One or two scholarships to a total of $1,200 have been established in memory of Ranjit Azad by his family. Until his death in 1985, Mr. Azad pursued a career in the field of labour and immigration with both the federal and provincial governments. His life-long interest in music, literature and especially poetry, was most notably manifested by his translation of the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam from the original Persian in to his own Punjabi dialect. The scholarship(s) will be awarded on the recommendation of the Department of CreativeWritingto undergraduate or graduate students in the Department who have demonstrated excellence in the writing of poetry.

Maxine SEVACK Memorial Scholarship NON-FICTION
A scholarship of $500 has been made available by the Maxine Sevack Memorial Foundation. Maxine Sevack was a student in the Department of CreativeWriting. Following graduation, she established herself as a successful magazine journalist. She died in a plane crash in Guatemala in her 28th year. The award is made on the recommendation of the Department of CreativeWriting to a student who has completed at least one year of study and shows promise in writing. In making the award, the candidate's financial circumstances may be considered.

Iser STEIMAN Memorial Scholarship in Translation
A scholarship of $300 is in memory of Iser Steiman, a Vancouver physician who translated Russian texts, including biographies and autobiographies as well as significant medical articles and books. The scholarship is awarded on the recommendation of the Department ofCreativeWriting to a student who has shown ability in the art of translation. The candidate's financial circumstancesmay also be considered.

Laura STEIMAN Memorial Scholarship in Children's Literature
This scholarship of $350 is in memory of Laura Steiman, who appreciated fine work in all the arts. The scholarship is awarded on the recommendation of the Department of CreativeWriting to a student who has shown ability in the writing of children's literature. Jacob ZILBER Scholarship SCREEN
A $900 scholarship has been endowed by the Smith Family Foundation to honour Jacob Zilber on his retirement from the Department ofCreativeWriting in 1989 and has subsequently been enhanced by Jake and Alice Zilber. The scholarship acknowledges his central role in the development of scriptwriters and the art of scriptwriting at UBCand in British Columbia, and symbolizes the affection and respect of his students and friends. The award is made on the recommendation of the Department to a student who has shown exceptional promise as a writer for screen and television and has completed at least one year of study in a B.F.A. or M.F.A. program in CreativeWriting.

A $300 scholarship has been endowed by the Smith Family Foundation to honour Norman Rothstein, B.A.'s9, a lifelong resident of Vancouver, a generous supporter of UBC and a friend to many charities and people of this city. It is awarded on the recommendation of the Department of CreativeWriting to a student who has shown ability in the writing of poetry. Financial circumstances are a consideration.

An $1800 scholarship has been endowed by the Faculty Women's Club in memory of Dr. Ida Mabelle Green, LL.D. Ida Green was a pioneer in the American Association of University Women and in the provision of graduate fellowships for women. With her husband Cecil H. Green, Dr. Green was a major benefactor of post-secondary education and the advancement of science. The scholarship is awarded on the joint recommendation of the School of Music and the Departments ofCreativeWriting, Fine Arts and Theatre to a student entering the third or higher year of study in the creative or performing arts.

A $4,000 scholarship has been endowed by friends, colleagues and the Province of British Columbia to honour Earle Birney and to recognize his contribution to Canadian Literature. George McWHIRTER Prize in Poetry UNDERGRAD A $500 prize has been endowed by colleagues, friends and students in honour of George McWhirter's retirement and in recognition of his thirty-five years of teaching at UBC. A recipient of the Sam Black Award for Education and Development in the Visual and Creative Arts, George has assisted hundreds of young writers in their careers. The award is made on the recommendation of the CreativeWritingProgram to an undergraduate student specializing in poetry.
